Sex Trafficking in the Spotlight

“Human trafficking” conjures up images ofinternational sex rings and slave labor in other countries.

But human traffickers and their victims are aconstant presence in Milwaukee.

The Milwaukee Police Department has more than 125open investigations into sex traffickers, cases in which pimps are forcing, coercing or lying to victims so that they will sell sex for money, drugs orprotection.

BROOKFIELD, Wis. (AP) -- A husband and wife from southeastern Wisconsin have been deported to their native Philippines after completing six-year federal sentences for human trafficking.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced the deportations Friday of 67-year-old Jefferson Calimlim Sr. and his 66-year-old wife, Elnora.

Federal and local law enforcement agencies rounded up 53 adult prostitutes and three pimps during a joint operation targeting human trafficking in the Milwaukee area, the FBI announced Monday.

Seven juveniles, girls ages 16 and 17, also were taken into custody during the June 21-22 operation, the highest number of underage people "recovered" locally in the nationwide effort called Operation Cross Country, FBI Special Agent Robert Botsch said.
