Over the past year, the Singapore authorities have intensified enforcement efforts to combat human trafficking, which local human rights advocates say remains a worrying problem, contributing to estimated annual profits in Asia of US$10 billion (S$12.9 billion).

This report prompted Social Development and Human Security Minister's secretary Anusorn Eiamsa-Ard to visit the province for inspection yesterday, where he was told by Songkhla deputy governor Surapong Panut-ampon that there were many human-trafficking cases in terms of prostitution in the city.

More action needs to be taken quickly by the Government to combat human trafficking in Singapore, a migrant-worker rights group urged yesterday.

Transient Workers Count Too said at a media briefing that the country's current law omits parts of the definition for human trafficking, as spelt out in a 2000 United Nations (UN) protocol.

Human trafficking racket busted, 4 held

CHENNAI: The city police on Tuesday busted a human trafficking racket in which women from Kerala were taken to Singapore and forced into prostitution. Following a complaint by one of the victims, police arrested two men, Sathya and Johnson, on charges of kidnapping the woman and her friend.
