Sex trafficking on the rise in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - North Carolina is one of the top 10 worst states for sex trafficking and Wilmington is one of the key cities.

"It's hard to believe that modern day slavery exists here in the US and it does and then more importantly that it exists here in Wilmington and it's happening everyday," said MaLisa, co-founder of the Centre of Redemption.

Man jailed on human trafficking charges

Randolph Johnson Spain, whose home address wasn't immediately available, allegedly lured women out of the county and forced them to engage in prostitution, according to the release.

"He would lure them in, befriend them and then take them out of town and then kind of keep them and force them into doing that kind of thing," said Linda Rawley, a police department spokeswoman.

Nationally recognized anti-human trafficking activist, Yvonne Williams, spoke at East Carolina University about the issue on Thursday night. She is passionate about stopping trafficking crimes.
