NORTHERN Ireland’s public prosecutors must do more to bring successful prosecutions against those involved in human trafficking, it was claimed yesterday.

On Tuesday evening, more than 130 premises were raided on both sides of the border and eight people arrested in a joint PSNI/Garda operation targeting organised prostitution, criminality and money laundering.

Five people were arrested as more than 170 PSNI officers raided 20-plus properties in every county of Northern Ireland.

It is thought that at least 10 brothels were discovered during the raids, known as Operation Quest, which involved the Serious and Organised Crime Agency, Europol and the UK Border Agency.

LAGAN Valley MLA Brenda Hale has welcomed the launch of the Northern Ireland Assembly All Party Group on Human Trafficking as a positive development in promoting effective action against traffickers.

The new Assembly Group is aimed at tackling the issues associated with trafficking by raising awareness, building co-operation with parliamentary counterparts throughout the UK and advocating changes in the law, policy and practice.

Assembly launches human trafficking group

The group has been created to promote effective action against trafficking for sexual and labour exploitation.

Adults and children are known to be trafficked into Northern Ireland for sexual exploitation.

However, they are also brought into the region to be used in various forms of labour exploitation and for criminal activity - including illegal drug production, fraud and theft.
