The police have unearthed a bonded labour-cum-torture cell at a brick-kiln in Kot Ladha village and have recovered 100 persons including 30 women and 25 minor children.
The police have also arrested four accused here on Sunday.
As many as 125,709 registered kiln workers in Punjab are being forced to suffer an estimated loss of Rs 1.1 billion per month as kiln owners are making them work well under the official stipulated amount of Rs 742 per 1,000 bricks.
JAMMU: The district administration officials conducted the raid and rescued 111 ‘bonded labourers’ from the brick kiln in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.
“As many as 111 ‘bonded’ labourers have been rescued from a brick kiln in Kathua district,” reliable sources here today.
Sleuths of anti-human trafficking unit of the Criminal Investigation Department, in a joint operation with a team comprising officials of the district administration, raided the brick kiln at Bagalur village near Lingarajapuram.
A couple and their five minor children from Odisha, who were allegedly forced to work as bonded labourers at a brick manufacturing unit at Kannurahalli near Hoskote on the outskirts of the city, were rescued on Thursday.
According to the report, the incident occurred near a jungle in Belpada village in Kalahandi district of Odisha when the two labourers were being taken back to their homes to recover the money paid to them in advance when they were hired.
