The United States government says Ghanaian women are being forced into prostitution and forced labour in foreign countries, particularly in the Middle East.

According to the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report 2013, Ghanaian women migrating to the Middle East to work are forced into prostitution upon their arrival.

More than 12 years after the Idia Renaissance group in Benin-City led by Mrs Eki Igbinedion, wife of former governor of Edo State, led a spirited campaign against human trafficking especially to Italy and other parts of Europe, the Spanish police have revealed they have broken up a ring that smuggled women from Nigeria into Spain and forced them into street prostitution by burning them with irons and using voodoo rituals.

Efforts aimed at fighting human trafficking in the country have yielded fruit as four persons have been convicted for human trafficking in a case that was instituted against them by the Benin zonal office of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP).

Not surprisingly, the name "Vidomègon" will probably only raise an eyebrow among readers who find the word strange, not because it describes the plight of over one hundred thousand children, mainly girls, sold into slavery, prostitution and child pornography rings from Western Africa, undergoing rape, mutilation and murder.

Moldova is among the world’s top 10 countries with highest prevalence of modern slavery. The former Soviet Republic ranks 6th after Nepal, being followed by Benin, according to a first-ever global slavery index published on Thursday by the Australia-based rights group Walk Free Foundation.
