One of the victims of the gang, Arumugam, a worker from Puducherry, who landed as a bonded labourer at a sugarcane field in Ariyalur district, managed to escape and returned home a few days ago.

An alcoholic, Arumugam found a 'missing man notice' at an arrack shop in the Union territory which stated that Purushothaman, a daily wage worker from Lawspet, went missing in November last year. He had seen Purushothaman working at the sugarcane field from where he escaped. Arumugam alerted Purushothaman's relatives.

The relatives of the missing man and Arumugam visited the sugarcane field in Ariyalur and managed to trace
Purushothaman. They approached the Ariyalur police who nabbed two members of the human trafficking gang. A police team from Ariyalur brought Purushothaman and the two accused to Puducherry and handed them over to the Lawspet police.

The Lawspet police arrested Anbarasan from Pillur in Villupuram district and Murugan from Thattanchavady in Puducherry. They launched a hunt for another member of the gang, identified as Shanmugam from Valavanur in Villupuram district.

The police have proposed to transfer the case to the anti-human trafficking wing of the CB-CID for a detailed investigation.

According to the statements of the rescued workers, there are several workers from the Union territory and from various parts of Tamil Nadu working in inhumane conditions as bonded labourers at the sugarcane fields in Ariyalur district.
