The 77-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Brazilian court in 2010 for trafficking organs and an international warrant was issued for his arrest.
Antonio del Greco, Senior Police Director of Italian state police detailed the crimes he was convicted of:
“Nineteen cases have been confirmed by the judicial authorities. People received superficial medical examinations in Brazil and then they were taken in South Africa. Here they were subjected to surgery and these organs were transplanted to wealthy people.”
He claimed that it was the first time that a person convicted of such serious offences was caught in Italy. Tauber was transferred to a nearby prison and now faces extradition to Brazil.
