A Sioux Falls man accused of running a sex trafficking "house of horrors" received a maximum sentence in court Monday.

U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson announced the formation of a new task force Thursday to combat human trafficking in South Dakota.

This announcement comes on the same day a Sioux Falls man was sentenced to three life sentences for human trafficking—an example of how serious law enforcement officials are taking these crimes.

It may be a reality that is hard to accept, but South Dakota is quickly becoming a state with a significant human trafficking issue.

"I believe from our experience with sex trafficking, it's a lot more pervasive than we would want to know or want to believe, even in South Dakota," DCI Director Bryan Gortmaker said.
