NEWARK — Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in New Jersey have removed a Romanian man wanted in his home country on human trafficking and prostitution charges.

In its Trafficking in Persons Report 2013, the US department of state said 48 trafficking victims were identified in Ireland in 2012, 23 of them children, including 19 children in the “commercial sex” trade.

Thousands of people are being trafficked to the UK and forced to work long hours in squalid conditions for next to no pay, a major report has warned.

The UK Human Trafficking Centre (UKHTC) said 1,000 victims of trafficking for forced labour had been referred to the centre since 2009, but said this represented the ‘tip of the iceberg’ for a ‘hidden crime’.

A leading Dutch hospital, the Erasmus Medical Centre, is to conduct a three-year study of the international black market in human organs for the European Commission. Institutions from Romania, Sweden, Bulgaria and Spain as well as the European Police Office, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Eurotransplant and the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT) will be involved in the project.

LONDON (Reuters) - Younger and younger girls are being dragged into prostitution because of the global economic crisis, a conference on women's rights was told on Wednesday.

About 21 million people - or three out of 1,000 people globally - are in forced labor, meaning they have been coerced or deceived into jobs which they cannot leave, figures released by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) this year showed.

At least 540 Bulgarians were victims of human trafficking in 2011, while Romania investigated nearly 900 similar cases last year.
