MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines and Indonesia have agreed to intensify efforts to crack down on human trafficking, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said yesterday.

In a statement, Immigration Commissioner Siegfred Mison said a delegation from Indonesia visited the country last week and met with him.

BC man convicted of human trafficking

A man accused of keeping a Filipino nanny in domestic servitude is the first person to be convicted of human trafficking in B.C.

A jury on Wednesday night found Franco Orr guilty of one count of human trafficking, one count of misrepresenting facts that could induce an error and one count of employing a foreign national illegally.

The Court of First Instance also found the Filipina defendant, M.R., guilty of facilitating prostitution by two other female compatriots. The two other women, J.S. and J.V., aged 27 and 35, were sentenced to one year in prison each.

In its Trafficking in Persons Report 2013, the US department of state said 48 trafficking victims were identified in Ireland in 2012, 23 of them children, including 19 children in the “commercial sex” trade.

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - The government vowed today to exert more efforts in addressing the problem of human trafficking after the United States has retained the country under Tier 2 status.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte, in a news briefing, said that while the US State Department kept the Philippines at Tier 2, Washington has acknowledged some of the Aquino administration's actions against human trafficking.
